INTERNATIONAL GUARDIANS
“CNN” = the worldwide leader of news + “i” stands for international + “e” stands for Español + Design which means we care about what we craft.
The CNNieDESIGN team are the guardians of the red badge brand, a multi-award winning group of diverse creatives that are driven by their passion to be compelling and successful visual storytellers. We work in an open and collaborative studio where the designers are encouraged to share their thoughts on each others work or offer any tips or techniques that can make an idea better and we diligently work to be inclusive with our clients throughout the design process.
We oversee two – 24/7 networks of visual product, one in English and one in Spanish. Ranging from on-air, live, content driven graphics, to multi-animation show branding, to feature presentations and sponsorship product. Our design team of 20 come from all different art disciplines – graphic design, digital design, industrial design, architectural design, package design, ranging in production works from print to photography, consumer products to animations, environmental works to humanitarian initiatives, just to name a few. Collectively we work around the clock to keep the visuals current, engaging, accurate, and cutting edge and always with our audiences in mind.
Creating art for viewers from Abu Dhabi to Zurich and everywhere in between can sometimes be a challenge. A color or image can be perceived as beautiful in one part of the world and offensive in another so research and an understanding of cultures is paramount for creating successful art for a global audience. We strive to push the needle forward with industry leading style and techniques while at the same time maintaining current shows and offering a consistent award-winning product. Plus, we are steadfast and poised at any moment to support new innovative designs with a re-launch of a single show, rebrand a complete franchise, or even a redesign for an entire network.
We are proud, we are honest and we are true to our craft. We are CNNieDESIGN.

INTERNATIONAL AMBASSADORS
THE ROYAL WEDDING
Deborah Bush – Sr. Graphic Artist John Leonard – Sr. Production Designer Brent Overbeck – Design Director
One of the largest projects this year was for the royal wedding, conveniently titled “The Royal Wedding of Prince Harry & Meghan Markle”. We were the principal designers for this entire project but unlike our typical workflow in which we work with CNN International and Español producers only, in this case we actually were led by the CNN U.S. team of producers and then the look got adapted afterward for the rest of our international networks including CNN Español (titled- La Boda Real…). Working directly with the CNN U.S. departments we had to extend our normal reach into new territories for production and we wanted the visuals to back it up.
We decided to go with a paper construction aesthetic for the main environments accented by gold coated flowers and flourishes of gold embroidered textures. We celebrate the most modern royal couple to date by balancing elegance with one of the world’s most universal and essential items, paper. Enclosed in the paper wedding invitation itself we find a beautiful paper world with gold accents that showcase the joining of the petals on the flowers to symbolize the union of two souls and their families being joined together as one. The glow of the warm light also represents their union and being located at the heart of the church it shines outwardly inviting us all to attend the wedding of the year.
The construction of these worlds out of paper took a pair of our talented designers to really pull it off. They worked in tandem with each other for 2 months to develop the look for a complete brand of assets, including animations, print, on location set design, and much, much, more for all three CNN networks.
This project was a wonderful example of the scope that we challenge ourselves to take on and stretch the norms of what a traditional royal wedding coverage might look like, even in the news business. We believed this was not a typical royal couple and therefore merited a more unique look with natural modern style in order to compliment the grandeur of the event itself.
